The WordMasters Challenge
Every year more than 250,000 3rd-8th
grade students participate in the national WordMasters Challenge. On December 13 Gateway students completed the
first of three of these WordMaster Challenge meets.
What exactly is the WordMasters Challenge? This
contest challenges students to increase their verbal reasoning skills through
analogies based on words they have learned.
At each grade level, the Challenge consists of three 20-minute
analogy-solving sessions held in each student’s classroom (grades 3-12). Excellence in the meet will require both a
mastery of the meaning of the words and thoughtful reasoning about the
relationships between these words as expressed in the analogies.
The remaining two meets are in February and April. At the end of the year, Gateway students who
maintain at least an average of ten correct per meet will receive a Certificate
of Excellence, and those with an average of fifteen or greater will receive a
WordMasters Medallion. Here are the
current WordMaster Medallion candidates from the December meet: Nathan Neri, Wes Wade, Kevin
Pedrizetti, Janeen Neri, Alex Challand, Timothy Wirtz, Luke Garcia and Joseph
Zamjahn. Parents, please
remember to keep encouraging your student for the remaining two meets as they
improve their verbal reasoning skills.
