BRAIN FOOD FOR KIDS

In the past several years I have become aware of the application of growing brain research on students’ learning.  One of my emphasis for teachers and parents this year is to increase our knowledge and application of  this brain research and student learning.  Today, I want to go explore the question:  what is a really good brain diet?  What foods enhance our learning and memory?  Here is a short summarized list from Marilee Sprenger’s book Learning & Memory – The Brain in Action.  Here are some benefits, chemical agents and the source foods that increase them:

Long-term memory

(acetylcholine)

Eggs, liver and soy products

Alertness

(tyrosine)

Protein foods

General memory

(calpain)

Calcium-rich  food products

Drowsiness (claming effect)

(serotonin)

Carbohydrate foods

Sprenger also makes these recommendations:

      1. To be alert, eat protein rich foods, both at the beginning and middle of the day.

      2. Save most of your carbohydrates for late afternoon or the evening meal.

      3. Drink water to keep the brain hydrated (It’s 78% water!)

I hope these few facts and pointers will assist you in giving your child a learning advantage as they go through their day at school.  Have a great week!

Serving the Savior,

Mr. Stutzman

One condition of accreditation requires that Gateway Christian have a library of at least 3,000 books. Remember, a portion of the sales benefits Gateway Christian to buy books and other library accessories with our profits. Not only can you expand your child’s reading skills, but you will also help expand our library through the profits made on this book fair.
