Raising Your Student’s
Achievement From Home
Since
the significant research about how students learn was done by Benjamin Bloom in
the 1970s, many educational researchers have followed suite. Robert Marzano, is a current educational
researcher who has found the following parental qualities that create a home
atmosphere conducive to higher achievement:
·
Parents having frequent and systematic
discussions with their children regarding schoolwork
·
Parents encouraging their children regarding
schoolwork, and
·
Parents providing resources to help their
children do schoolwork
The strongest parental factor, however, for
increasing student achievement was found to be from parents with an
authoritative parenting style. The
authoritative parenting style falls between the two extremes of on the one hand
being authoritarian (rigid rules and harsh consequences) and on the other
permissive (very few restrictions and few consequences). Authoritative
Parenting is characterized by:
·
Parental warmth (that communicates interest
in the day-to-day lives of your children)
·
Inductive discipline (in which
transgressions are met with consequences that are executed with little or no
negative emotion).
The application of these
qualities, of course, varies with the maturity level of your child(ren), but I
hope you can see how you as a parent can promote higher student achievement in
your child(ren) right in your home.
Considerate application of these parenting qualities can very likely
increase your child’s achievement in the classroom.
